Sacred Geometry

Certain types of geometry are considered sacred because they codify the hidden order behind creation.  The strands of our DNA, the cornea of our eye, snow flakes, pine cones, flower petals, diamond crystals, the branching of trees, a nautilus shell, the star we spin around, the galaxy we spiral within, the air we breathe, and all life forms as we know them emerge out of timeless geometric codes, which reveal to us the nature of each form and its vibrational resonances.

These patterns, designs and structures from the most minuscule particles, to expressions of life discernible by human eyes, to the greater cosmos are also symbolic of the underlying metaphysical principle of the inseparable relationship of the part to the whole. It is this principle of oneness underlying all geometry that permeates the architecture of all form in its myriad diversity. This principle of interconnectedness, inseparability and union provides us with a continuous reminder of our relationship to the whole, a blueprint for the mind to the sacred foundation of all things created.

The designs of exalted holy places from the prehistoric monuments at Stonehenge and the Pyramid of Khufu at Giza, to the world's great cathedrals, mosques, and temples are based on these same principles of sacred geometry.

Mandalas

A mandala is a symbol that represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the structure of life itself.

Mandalas translate complex mathematical expressions into simple shapes and forms. They show how the basic patterns governing the evolution of life workout the most beautiful results.

The word 'mandala' arises from the Sanskrit and means sacred circle. The circle symbolizes the womb of creation; and mandalas are geometric designs that are made through uniform divisions of the circle. The shapes that are formed from these divisions are symbols that embody the mathematical principles found throughout creation. They reveal the inner workings of nature and the inherent order of the universe.

Mandalas act as a bridge between the higher and lower realms. They are interdimensional gateways linking human consciousness to the realms of archetypes and the infinite. The relationship of form, movement, space and time is evoked by the mandala.

Mandalas offer a way to engage with the inherent harmony and balance of nature. They bring the principles of nature into our field of awareness. For thousands of years, mandala imagery has served as a means to an expanded way of thinking. The images transcend language and the rational mind. They bring about a certain wisdom of universal knowledge and a deeper understanding of human consciousness.

Yantras

Yantra is the Sanskrit word for “support” and "instrument". A yantra is a geometric design acting as a highly efficient tool for contemplation, concentration and meditation. Yantra carry spiritual significance:  there is a specific meaning that pertains to higher levels of consciousness.  The meaning is contextual.  Traditionally such symbols are used in Eastern mysticism to balance the mind or focus it on spiritual concepts.

The yantra provides a focal point that is a window into the Absolute, functioning as a revelatory conduits of cosmic truths.  Being an outer and inner doorway, a yantra depicts both macrocosmic and microcosmic forces acting together - the movement towards and away from the centre - "control" and "liberation" within the one device.

Pythagoras, a mathematician, philosopher and mystic of Greek antiquity, described geometry as visual music. Music is created by applying laws of frequency and sound in certain ways. States of harmonic resonance are produced when frequencies are combined in ways that are in unison with universal law.

These same laws can be applied to produce visual harmony. Instead of frequency and sound it is angle and shape that are combined in ways that are in unison with universal law. Geometric shapes can be orchestrated in ways to produce visual symphonies that show the harmonic unification of diversity.

Yantras are a particular field of mandala imagery that visually represent the harmonic tones of mantras (sacred sounds). By directing our thought patterns to these archetypal planes we invite the essence of these levels to penetrate our minds and thinking.  An attunement of individual consciousness with the harmony of universal consciousness develops.

Yantras may also be described as power diagrams that can exert powerful effects on the subtle energy body.  These effects have been measured by means of acupuncture and applied kinesiology.

Sri Yantra

Sri Yantra mandala is the 'King of Power Diagrams' and though its origin is unknown it is over 12,000 years old.  It is the most powerful and the most revered of all Hindu yantras and embodies the energetic signature of the entire cosmos and Creative Forces of the Universe.  The Sri Yantra is believed to be the image of the OM mantra, which is understood to be the primordial sound of creation.  It is a beautiful and complex sacred geometry used as a highly efficient tool for contemplation, concentration and meditation.

The Shri Yantra also known as Sri Chakra is a mandala formed by nine interlocking triangles surrounding a dot in the center called a bindu. There is a mysterious beauty that arises in the way that these nine diverse triangles interlink to form a state of perfect balance and harmony. Four of these triangles are orientated upright representing the Divine Masculine Principle. Five of these triangles are inverted triangles representing the Divine Feminine Principle of the Universe.

Together the nine triangles are interlaced in such a way as to form 43 smaller triangles in a web symbolic of the entire cosmos or a womb symbolic of creation:   they express non-duality.

This is surrounded by a lotus of eight petals, a lotus of sixteen petals, and an earth square resembling a temple with four doors.  These four doors or gateways on each side note that if we are coming from the material world, we have access to the center from all directions. The inside has round structures, indicating unity.

In the Shri Yantra Mandala, the lotus petals play an important role. They are a symbol of development and as they indicate the emergence from the lowest to the highest they are a powerful symbol of the chakras.

The mandala is a shape that is often used in the design of many eastern temples.

How to order a Custom Mandala?

Creating with colour is pure enjoyment for me at this time and a way for sharing the Light in a more tangible way.   I use acrylic paints to hand paint mandalas on either ¼ plywood, canvas or hardboard.  An average of 24-30 hours is lovingly spent in divine communion creating each unique piece, following the precise codes of sacred geometry.  At present I am focused on the Sri Yantra mandala.

If you are interested in  acquiring a mandala for personal use, for your yoga studio or meditation classroom, a spiritual center, or simply for attuning yourself to sacred space, please email me to discuss size, colour, materials and costs for creating your customized mandala.  I will be pleased to assist you.  The mandalas at the top of the page are presently for sale.

Blessings,
